Well, what a week it has been in Footy to say the least!
I was out and about this morning, getting a few supplies, not panic buying but collecting a few things for my mother in law who has decided it would be in her best interests to put up the shutters and hide out until this is all blown over. Approaching the counter to pay for my items where I was extremely pleased to see at the checkout a man wearing a Willetton Football Club polo shirt, none other than the BBQ king himself Billy Jones. Ensuring we maintained our required 1.5 meters separation our quick exchange reflected on how disappointed we both were with the way the 2020 season has turned out. I think we pretty much nailed it though when it was said, “We didn’t see that one coming did we!”
We all know by now what’s going on with this Corona Virus pandemic and what the government and society is asking and expecting of us all to ensure we can see it past as quickly as possible. It’s on that note that I’m connecting with everyone that has an interest in the Willetton Football Club. The club is hopeful we will be returning in 2020 and as such we are planning around this crisis quickly coming to a head. Granted, we have seen nothing like this in our lifetimes and footy has never been shut down before but the sun will rise again, sooner than later, and the Willetton Football Club will be playing footy again.
When exactly this will be is still uncertain but we have a target date we are working to being the 31st of May to recommence training and the 13th of June as the first scheduled game. Yesterday I spoke with the Perth Football League and they are working through the financial scenarios for a nine week season and the fixturing for this, just as the WAFL has been doing. Behind the scenes your committee is still working hard having held a committee meeting on Tuesday the 17th of March. Some key points that came from this included:
Let’s Look After Our Sponsors
A big thank you to all the sponsors who have paid up on the invoices issued. This is the reason the club is able to claim that it will survive this unwelcome hiatus. Our thoughts go out to all ours sponsors in these extraordinary times but also to your staff and particularly those whose business has a focus in the hospitality industry. No other industry has been impacted in a worse possible way by the recent Federal Government directives to shut their doors to customers indefinitely.
In my time as President at Willetton Football Club C.Y. O’Connor’s Village Pub has been amongst out most generous sponsors but has now had to reduce trading to take away only. The impact of this virus is so much worse for them than our Football Club. CY’s are still offering bottle shop and takeaway meal services, here’s a link to their website https://www.cyopub.com.au/covid-safety/ showing what’s available so if you are in any position to lets return the favour and support them as much as possible. We all know it can possibly be cheaper to go to the big chain bottle shops but let’s face it they don’t look after the Willetton Football Club so I would implore you to go out of your way, drive that little bit further and get your alcohol supplies from John Dawkins at C.Y. O’Connor’s Village Pub, player & sponsor of our 3rd’s team. While you’re there grab the family a takeaway meal. We need to look after those close to us and those who look after us should get priority.
If C.Y. O’Connor’s Village Pub is too far to drive then duck into Celebrations Riverton on Riverton drive, just through the lights at Riley Road / Willeri Drive & High Road intersection, a little bit past the Riverton Forum Shopping Centre. Don’t believe what you read & hear about Liquor stores booming, maybe the big ones are but I can tell straight up Celebrations Riverton can use every bit of help, they rely heavily on the trade through the restaurant in the same little shopping complex and you guessed it, that’s been closed. This is Celebrations 2nd year as a Club Sponsor, we need them around the club next year as well so get behind them please.
If you are a small business owner you may be in a position to benefit from the recent Federal Government announcement that the immediate tax write off for asset purchases has been increased from $30,000 to $150,000. You should get your own tax advice on this but it could mean that you are in a position to update one or more of your business vehicles, perhaps for the same monthly cash outlay you are currently spending and generate a significant tax break for your business. Whatever you buy could be a full tax deduction but you need to do this before the 30th of June 2020. None better to buy your car from than Westside Auto Wholesale, our 2020 women’s team sponsor. Bob Fowler has over 2,000 cars in the one place, under the one roof and at prices that will surprise and impress you. I can give you a personal recommendation on Westside Auto Wholesale, GR8 Property has purchased its whole fleet of business and personal cars through Westside Auto Wholesale and cannot fault them.
When you buy your new car from Westside Auto Wholesale make sure you speak with Justin Abbott at Millennial Broker about the finance. Justin’s business Millennial Broker is our reserves sponsor and was also responsible for putting quite a few beers on the bar after the Reserves Grand Final last year so it maybe time for a payback. Millennial Broker isn’t just car finance, their core business is Mortgage Finance. As you can imagine in times like this not many people are thinking about buying a property so Justin isn’t doing as much mortgage business as he would like and would appreciate all the support we can give. You may not be buying a new property but perhaps already own one and could really benefit from an extra $50 to $100 per month cashflow. Speak with Millennial Broker about refinancing your existing mortgage facility, especially if you have been with the same lender for more than two or three years or are coming out of a fixed rate loan facility sometime soon.
Speaking of mortgages, with interest rates at their lowest ever in Australian history and a shortage of quality housing in the Perth market you can’t go past Victor Paz’s LJ Hooker Willetton to either sell your existing property or buy that new property. Victor Paz & his LJ Hooker Willetton and Jandakot offices are amongst the largest LJ Hooker offices in Australia for good reason, but as with Justin’s Millennial Broker this is a massive interruption to their business. If you didn’t know LJ Hooker Willetton is the Willetton Football Club’s major sponsor for the 2020 & 2021 seasons. Now really is a great buying time so if you are in a stable industry in a secure job why not give Victors team at LJ Hooker Willetton or Jandakot a call about what they have on offer.
And if you do buy or sell a property and need a settlement agent then speak to Lisa Bolton from Prestige Settlements. Prestige Settlements provided sponsorship for the ladies day this year. We are hopeful that we will still be able to host ladies day this year but if not, Prestige Settlements will be the sponsor for next year.
Maybe you’re thinking of buying an investment property, or maybe you already own an investment property, did you know GR8 Property, your league team sponsor, is a specialist property management company. GR8 Property has done nothing but manage property since 2006 and works across the entire Perth metro area, from Mandurah to Yanchep and east into the hills. Apart from the league team sponsors, your club’s secretary and president are the owners of GR8 Property and work tirelessly behind the scenes for Willetton.
Are you starting to go crazy in isolation do you need some fitness equipment to keep your fitness up? Intersport Armando Sports Willetton long time club sponsors and this year’s integrated sponsor have all the fitness equipment you need to maintain your fitness whilst in isolation. Armando De Abreu has supported the club for a long time and has helped the club source most of our football equipment so make sure you support the sports store that supports your club.
If you have to go out and do your shopping then while you’re there get your lunch from scoreboard sponsors Subway Willetton they are still open for takeaway food.
If you need some accounting or financial advice at this time then speak to Michael Martella at Letizia Palmer Chartered Accountants. Letizia Palmer Chartered Accountants have supported the club for the last two years in completing our legally required audits. Support the accountants that support your club.
2020 & 2021 Seasons
The 2020 pre-season had an amazing feel around the club particularly from all the playing group in creating a positive and inspiring atmosphere around the club. The players are the face of the club and even though we only got in one scratch match for the men and an AFLX carnival for the girls you have all done the club proud.
We can’t be condoning group interactions but we are planning for a season return on the 31st of May, so with this in mind can we all keep in touch with each other and motivate each other to maintain our physical preparedness for this start date. You all individually and the club as a whole will be in a much better placed come the 31st of May if each and every one of us gets up and does some physical fitness training and running. If any individuals want something a bit more structured with the discipline of a program, especially with all gyms also now locked down, let myself or Lachy Perhavec know and we’ll get that to you.
As Senior Coach Troy Douglas has said, “We are in a very dynamic and changing environment at the moment. For the health of all moving forward I think this (the postponement of the season) is a sensible decision. To all the players, coaches and support staff, stay safe and stay positive. We have all put in a lot of hard work as a club and this will not go to waste. Stay healthy, fit and enthusiastic and be ready for the 31st of May 2020 to hit the ground running.”
We have no idea what the revised 2020 season will look like but it would be great if we could have all 6 squads and a mass of supporters roaring and ready to go when that date comes around. In the idea world 2020 sees us playing again from the 13th of June and challenging for the premiership in every division.
In light of the upheaval that has come from this pandemic now is not the time to be adding further uncertainty to the Willetton Football Club. With this in mind I will commit to a further year as the President of the club and will be calling upon the other committee members to give serious consideration to do the same. This will ensure continuity going forward, rather than disruption, and allow us to set in place processes and strategies to better transition the club from year to year.
Finally, rest assured we are all hoping for and working toward the 31st of May start date but, in the meantime, stay safe, look after your loved ones and check in on your mates, especially those who may be impacted more severely. Wash your hands regularly and stop touching your face. I’m confident that we will come out of the other end of this, sooner or later with a new sense of priorities and values but all busting to get back into footy in whatever capacity we are involved.
